Green Mongolian Tara (Syama Tara)

The Swift Protectress and Embodiment of Compassion

Green Tara, known as “Syama Tara”, is one of the most beloved female Bodhisattvas in Tibetan and Mongolian Buddhism. She is considered the Mother of Liberation, a compassionate deity who swiftly protects beings from fear, obstacles, and suffering. Mongolian depictions of Green Tara emphasize her healing energy, dynamic posture, and connection to the vast, protective spirit of the steppes.

Symbolism & Appearance

Green Tara is usually depicted as a youthful, beautiful goddess with a serene expression, seated in a posture of readiness. One leg is folded in meditation, while the other extends outward, symbolizing her readiness to leap into action to help those in need.

  • Color Green: Represents vitality, enlightened activity, and nature’s renewal.

  • Right Hand: Extended in the gesture of generosity, offering protection.

  • Left Hand: Holds a blue lotus (utpala), symbolizing purity and compassion.

  • Lotus Pedestal: Reflects her divine origin and spiritual awakening.

Mongolian Tradition

In Mongolian Buddhist culture, Green Tara is highly revered as a guardian of the land and protector of travelers. Mongolians often pray to her for good fortune, swift success, healing, and freedom from danger. Tara thangkas, statues, and daily mantras are central to household altars and monastery rituals.

Mantra of Green Tara

“Om Tare Tuttare Ture Soha”
Chanting this mantra is believed to remove fears, calm the mind, and bring immediate blessings.
